How To Make A Patriotic Rag Quilt

DESCRIPTION +

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2 yd each of 8 different fabrics
  • 2 yds cotton batting
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine with walking foot
  • Iron

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut 80 4 1/2"x 4 1/2" squares and 60 8 1/2"x 4 1/2" rectangles out of fabric (rotating through patterns). Cut 40 4"x 4" squares and 30 8"x 4" rectangles out of batting. All fashion fabric pieces have 1/4" seam allowance.
  2. Sandwich batting pieces between either 2 squares or rectangles (wrong-sides together). Quilting through all layers, topstitch "x" pattern diagonally through the center of each piece.
  3. Sew first row of quilt: square, rectangle, square, rectangle, square, rectangle, square (right, short sides together). Continue in this fashion, sewing ten rows of pattern. Press all seams open.
  4. Top stitch 1/4" around entire edge of quilt. Snip around quilt edge every 1/4".
  5. Dampen quilt and let tumble in dryer to fray edges.
