SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 4 pieces of foam core
  • Charcoal chalk paint
  • Large brush
  • Floral wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Duct tape
  • Paper towels & water for clean up
  • Assorted floral/greenery

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Paint the foam core with charcoal chalk paint using a large brush. This may take several coats, try not to apply too much paint at once or the foam core will be over-saturated and curl. Set aside to dry.
  2. Using wire cutters, cut your floral stems to the desired length and remove any excess leaves from the stem.
  3. Cut a piece of floral wire around 6-8" long. Find the middle of the wire and wrap it tightly around the stem of your flower a few times.
  4. Push the ends of the wire through the foam core from front to back. Push them through about 1/2" apart from each other behind the stem. On the back of the foam core twist the two wires together to secure in place. Twist the ends together and push them against the board, cover the wire ends with a piece of duct tape to secure and keep the wires from snagging on anything.
  5. Repeat with each piece of floral, varying the layout.

JOANN HACKS:

  • If your foam core curls due to too much moisture from the paint, allow the boards to dry and then stack them together in the same direction and place a heavy object on top of them to flatten them back into shape. This make take some time. Set them overnight and make sure all the paint is dry before stacking.
  • When wiring the stems, make sure to put the wire near the top of the stem close to the bud or slightly below. If you wire the stem too close to the bottom the top will be too heavy and fall away from the board.
